Daily Inspiration: Halloween or Samhain from The Grandmother of Time by Zsuzsanna Budapest
The new year of the earth begins. We have reached the midpoint between Autumn Equinox
and Winter Solstice. This is the time to think about our own mortality. The veil is the thinnest
between the worlds tonight, and dead souls visit their living relatives. The custom of going
from door to door collecting sweets and money came from a British custom of begging for the
poor. When you let your kids go trick-or-treating, know that they represent the future. When
children knock on your door, offer them sweet gifts to sweeten the future. To give bad gifts to
children on this night is to bring bad luck on yourself. But the true stars of Halloween are the
elderly. They represent the year, now worn and gray. Remember grandmothers, grandfathers,
and elderly relatives. Give them greeting cards and food or take them out to dinner. To appease
the past is also good luck for the future.
According to Celtic legend, the four great grandmothers of Halloween hold the great treasures.
The cauldron of rebirth represents pleasure, the stone of destiny represents power, the sorceress’s
spear represents courage, and finally, the invincible sword, about which one finds so many legends,
stands for knowledge. These four older women are often portrayed in folk plays as holding their treasures and naming them. To see them and hear their voices is reserved only for the initiated and means great good luck.
This is a good day to give alms to the poor. The spirits receive these gifts with favor. In Europe,
food is passed to the poor at the gates of cemeteries. In the United States, many people go to parties
dressed up in outrageous costumes representing ghosts or the dead. In Ireland and Scotland, people
believe that the souls of the little people, or fairy folk, are about this night. The invisible barriers are lifted, and they revel in the company of the living.
With Love, Mary
