Daily Inspiration: Happy Halloween by Mary Woods
In the ancient Celtic traditions, October 31 marked the end of summer and the beginning of the New Year. This celebration was known as Samhain, the midpoint between Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice. Dating back to the 5th century B.C., this was believed to be the time when the veil between the worlds was thinnest, and dead souls would visit their living relatives. The custom of going from house to house collecting sweets and money came from the English practice of poor folks “mumming” for food. These ceremonies were carried on for many centuries.
In 835 A.D., the Pope declared the Catholic Holy Day known as All Saints Day on Nov. 1. It was orginally called Allhallowmas (the mass of the holy ones). The evening before became known as All Hallow Eve (the evening of the holy ones). So, the name Halloween is actually Christian in origin. The church was opposed to the old practices of Samhein, branded them as evil, and the followers of the old religion were persecuted. The remnants of Samhein were brought to the U.S. by the Irish immigrants in the 1840’s and the American tradition of Trick or Treating became popular in the 1930’s. Today Halloween is widely celebrated with candy given to children in costumes.
I like to perceive Halloween as a celebration of the inner child within all of us; a time of imagination and creativity. The idea of “what to be for Halloween” can be like the childhood game of “let’s pretend” or the adult opportunity to explore an inner archetype. The spirit of Halloween can be a dramatic, artistic presentation of creative-self expression for the purpose of fun, laughter, and play.
