Daily Inspiration: Mardi Gras by Mary Woods
Tuesday, February 9, 2016 is Mardi Gras, which means Fat Tuesday in French, and is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday, as the last fling prior to the 40 days of Lent, which proceed Easter. Also known as Shrove Tuesday in England, Mardi Gras sprang up throughout parts of Europe as a means to prepare for the coming time of self-denial, by the eating of rich food that wouldn’t be used during Lent.
A weekend long carnival and parade celebrated annually in New Orleans, Mardi Gras is celebrated with costumes, masks, beads, coins, and the crowning of a King and Queen. The colors are symbolic; purple represents justice, green for faith, and gold for power. Instead of being a time of debauchery, Mardi Gras can be seen as a joyful appreciation for all the abundance in our lives and a chance to bring some fun and festivities to celebrate.
